From the Career Center

A chalkboard displays career options connected to 'You' with colorful sticky notes.
Life after high school can feel exciting—but also a little scary—for both students and families. My goal is to make that transition easier and help students feel confident about their next steps.
It has been so fun to see so many students thinking about their future and how they can set themselves up now for success later! We have a vareity of options to help you explore!
  • Seniors: Many resources in the newsletter are geared specifically for seniors and their families. Be sure to review carefully—most guidance, tips, and support will be included here. The first opportunity is Application Day (see details below).
  • Next Steps Idaho If you missed the Grade Level Career Plans in last week’s newsletter, be sure to check them out! They link directly to Next Steps Idaho, offering fantastic resources for students and families exploring life after high school.
  • Military Exploration - Students can explore military and career options through the ASVAB, lunch visits from recruiters, or one-on-one meetings by request.
  • Lunch and Learns - Lunch & Learns give students the chance to connect with college, military, and career partners in the Career Center from 11:00–11:30. Bring your lunch, ask questions, and explore post-high school options. (Lunch is not provided unless specifically noted in the sign-up.)Sign-ups will be in the newsletter so presenters can plan materials and swag.

You don’t have to decide today what you want to do for the rest of your life—your focus right now is to explore your options! There are many ways to discover what paths might be the best fit for you.

Kimberly Gratiot, KHS Class of 1993

Kimberly Gratiot’s career journey proves that it’s never too late to change your path—or create a brand-new one. After starting out in the fast-food industry, where she became a General Manager at a young age and built a successful 13-year career, Kimberly made a bold decision: she left her job to pursue higher education as a first-generation, non-traditional, single mom student.

Unsure at first what career to pursue, she explored multiple majors before discovering her passion for sociology. Kimberly earned her Bachelor of Science in Sociology and later completed a Master’s in Educational Leadership: Higher Education in 2023.

After graduating, she began working at Idaho State University in the School of Nursing as an Administrative Assistant—a role that quickly grew into academic advising for pre-nursing students. “I love working with students and helping them find their pathway to a career,” Kimberly says. “Watching the dreams and goals of students become reality when they walk across the stage and receive their diploma is the most rewarding part of my work.”

In 2024, Kimberly became the Undergraduate Program Manager for the School of Nursing, overseeing everything from advising and class scheduling to coordinating clinical rotations. She credits her success to strong communication skills, a willingness to listen, and the perseverance she developed as a single parent balancing school, work, and family life.

Kimberly encourages current KHS students to embrace uncertainty: “It’s okay to not know what you want to do right now. Take time to figure out what makes you happy and pursue that. And remember—it’s never too late to change your path.”

Outside of work, Kimberly enjoys hiking, camping, paddleboarding, and exploring Idaho’s great outdoors. Her personal motto? “Work hard, stay humble.”

Free Application for Federal Student Aid

The FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid, is a form that students in the United States fill out to apply for financial aid to help pay for college or career school. It determines eligibility for various types of aid, including federal grants, loans, and work-study programs.

The FAFSA form will open on October 1, 2025 for students to complete for the 2026/2027 school year. We will work on this together during Application Day.
