Current Role: Kimberly Wheeler-Zehr is the Owner and Designer of Designs by Kim, a residential landscape design business she built from the ground up.
After graduating from Kuna High School, she earned an Associate Degree in Horticulture followed by a Bachelor of Applied Science with a minor in Biology from Boise State University, blending both technical training and university education. Growing up on a farm and participating in FFA sparked her love for the outdoors early on, and working in local nurseries throughout high school and college helped shape her career path. Although she originally planned to pursue biology, FFA introduced her to more hands-on careers, and the horticulture program at BSU exposed her to design—where she discovered her true passion.
Kimberly loves creating outdoor spaces that families can enjoy for years to come. She focuses on designing beautiful, sustainable, and manageable landscapes because she believes everyone deserves a personal outdoor sanctuary. Her journey to self-employment hasn’t always been easy; economic downturns and the challenges of running a business taught her resilience and the importance of saving and planning for the future. She credits hard work, dedication, and maintaining a positive attitude as the key ingredients to her success.
Her favorite memories from Kuna High School center around FFA—especially being crowned Harvest Queen and traveling with her team to Kansas City and Washington, D.C. Growing up on a farm, those trips were her first time flying and exploring other states, making the experiences unforgettable. Outside of work, Kimberly enjoys gardening, camping, traveling, spending time with her adult children, and hanging out with her French Bulldogs.
Reflecting on life, Kimberly says the phrase “Youth is wasted on the young” hits home. She wishes she had trusted her intuition sooner and taken bigger risks, such as expanding her business earlier or even starting the wedding venue she always dreamed of. Her advice for today’s students is to stay flexible, follow their passions, and not be afraid to change direction if they discover a new path that excites them.
