Justina Freilich, a 2014 graduate, has built an impressive career at the intersection of science, safety, and education. She currently works as a Health Physicist with MJW Corp. and serves as an Adjunct Professor at Idaho State University.
Justina’s interest in engineering and STEM began in high school through internships and extracurricular programs, including the Idaho High School Science and Aerospace Scholars (IHSSAS) program, which she credits as a major influence in shaping her career path. Through these experiences, she was introduced to materials used for radiation detection—and quickly became fascinated by the field of Health Physics.
She went on to earn her Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D. degrees, preparing her for a career focused on radiation safety. Today, Justina enjoys helping make workplaces safer and communicating complex radiation safety concepts to both professionals and the public.
💬 Advice for students:
“Take advantage of internships, extracurricular programs, and job shadow opportunities as much as possible. They help you figure out early on what you are—and aren’t—interested in.”
Justina also highlights the importance of technical writing, noting that the writing skills she learned in high school have been instrumental in her career. While balancing school and work can be overwhelming at times, she emphasizes the value of strong support systems and good time management.
Outside of academics and work, Justina has fond memories of participating in choir and musical productions and now enjoys jogging and reading in her free time.
