Allison Touchstone
Dr. Touchstone is a longtime Kuna resident who is in her 30th year in education, 21 of which have been in the Kuna school district. She has a passion for science and agriculture and has dedicated her career to both. This year, she is teaching 4 different face-to-face classes and 4 different online classes through KAVE (Kuna Access to Virtual Education), KSD's new online program. In Earth and Space Science, students have been learning about the solar system, and they are studying an individual planet in depth, making a model and informational flyer about the unique features of that planet in our solar system. Dr. T likes to give students a chance to get their hands dirty and cement learning through active experiences and experiential learning. Outside the classroom, Dr. T puts genetics into practice by raising American Brittany hunting dogs, puts plant science to work in her garden, uses landscape design to work at home, coaches and plays softball, loves to read all sorts of books, practices calligraphy, and helps her mom raise horses and cows when she can. |
To deepen their understanding of the solar system, Dr. Touchstone’s students got creative with hands-on learning, building custom models to study the unique features of each planet. |
Ms. Mayfield is a passionate English educator dedicated to making learning engaging, exploratory, and fun. She thrives on guiding students through creative, thought-provoking units like poetry, inspiring them to discover that English extends far beyond grammar—it encompasses depth, emotion, and figurative language. For Ms. Mayfield, the most rewarding aspect of teaching is helping students overcome challenges, build confidence in their voice, and experience those breakthrough moments when abstract concepts click. In the classroom, she fosters a collaborative, high-energy environment using hands-on activities and friendly competition. She emphasizes personal interaction and pencil-and-paper engagement over screen time, encouraging students to build meaningful connections, work as a team, and grow as learners together. Outside of teaching, Ms. Mayfield brings a creative, approachable, and enthusiastic spirit to her school community. Passionate about the arts, animals, and continuous personal growth, she models lifelong learning for her students, showing them daily that education is an ongoing journey of self-improvement and discovery. |
This past week, students were hard at work crafting their slam poems! To practice, we played a lively game of "music shuffles"—think musical chairs, but without the chairs! When the music played, students moved around the room, and when it stopped, they paired up with a classmate to share their work. Topics ranged from airplanes and trucks to thoughtful personal stories, and everyone did a fantastic job. Afterward, students presented their finished poems to the whole class. The kids had a blast, and Ms. Mayfield described the final presentations as "absolutely amazing!" |
Ms. Linzy is a passionate and energetic educator with extensive experience teaching Language Arts across all grade levels, as well as US History 2. Known for her thoughtful approach to learning, Ms. Linzy creates an engaging classroom environment centered around dynamic, hands-on activities that students thrive in and adapt to quickly. She successfully designed and gained approval for The American Character, an innovative interdisciplinary course where Language Arts 3 and US History 2 work hand-in-hand to bring historical themes and literature to life. Additionally, Ms. Linzy teaches AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), a course focused on equipping students with essential college and career readiness skills, such as critical thinking, organization, collaboration, and advanced study strategies. Above all, Ms. Linzy loves her students, and they love the high energy, care, and dedication she brings to the classroom every single day. |
American Character Students completed a 26-question short-answer quiz on the Great Depression and performed very well! To kick off their reading of Of Mice and Men, students created paper "bindles" to experience what it was like to "Ride the Rails" during the Great Depression. They selected five essential travel items to craft and carry in their bindles—with one class even taking theirs on a walk around campus. AVID 9 Students explored Costa’s Levels of Questioning by creating movie posters in small groups, writing three Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 questions for their chosen films. They also tackled a challenging worksheet on questioning levels through group collaboration. To apply these skills, students began watching Finding Nemo, taking detailed Cornell notes on specific themes to prepare higher-level thinking questions for an upcoming Socratic Seminar. |
Swan Falls has two fabulous recipients of the Kuna Ed Foundation grant this month : Katheryn Buchan and Amanda Linzy. They co-teach the American Character class that combines both ELA and history. They plan to put the funds towards upcoming field trips to the Warhawk Air Museum in December and the Old Idaho State Penitentiary second semester. |
Mr. Deatherage’s Dual Credit Anatomy students at Swan Falls High School recently jumped into hands-on learning with some fascinating dissections during their Anatomy Lab. |
Students in the KHS Outdoor Natural Science class participated in an immersive Fire Ecology Field Trip to Dedication Point to study the delicate balance of the Sagebrush Steppe ecosystem. Guided by experts from the Bureau of Land Management and Birds of Prey NCA Partnership, the class explores the devastating impact of wildfires and the spread of invasive grasses. Students engaged in field science data collection by conducting quadrat plant surveys with Lynell Sutter, Plant Ecologist (Birds of Prey NCA Partnership) to compare native vegetation against invasive weeds. Students also assisted in a habitat restoration project with Steve Alsup (President of Birds of Prey NCA Partnership) and Tricia Matthews (Idaho Master Naturalist) by planting native plant species. Lastly, students observed wildlife and birds of prey through high-powered optics guided by BLM Wildlife Biologist Joe Weldon, gaining a deeper understanding of how fire cycles threaten local biodiversity. Ultimately, this Outdoor Natural Science class field trip seeks to connect students to their local environment by demonstrating the urgent need to protect endangered sagebrush habitats from becoming monocultures of cheatgrass. |
If you are a first-time voter, have recently moved, or have moved to Idaho from another state, please take a moment to check or update your voter registration status. The next election is Tuesday, November 3, 2026 and no school will be held that day. This is an example of a sentence to begin a paragraph. |
