Note from the Principal

Dear KHS/SFHS Families,

I want to take a moment to recognize our amazing fall sports teams.  Here is a fall Season Recap:

The fall athletic season is coming to an end, but what a fantastic run it’s been! Our student-athletes brought incredible heart, energy, and grit to every single game, race, and meet this semester. Between welcoming brand-new head coaches and watching veteran leaders step up, every single program gave us something to celebrate.
Here is a quick look back at what our teams accomplished:
  • Football: In their first year under Head Coach Josh Bravo, the team punched their ticket to the 6A state playoffs with a huge 27–13 win over Meridian! This marks our first postseason trip since 2024.
  • Catch the Action: Round 1 is this Friday at 7:00 PM vs. Boise High at Dona Larson Park.
  • Cross Country: Led by Amanda Kitts, both the boys' and girls' squads kept knocking down personal records all season across the Treasure Valley. A massive congratulations to Trevin Black and Adric Tait for qualifying for State! They’ll be racing up in Pocatello this Saturday (10/31).
  • Swimming: Head Coach Michael J. Blackburn and Our swimmers had an awesome season, consistently placing in the top 10 and setting new personal bests in both IM and relay events. Extra shoutouts to our two new school record holders: Lydia Perry: Women’s 50 yd Freestyle,  Ruby Strasser: 100m Butterfly
  • Volleyball: In her first year as Head Coach, Courtney Lecholat had the team playing tough all year. Highlights included a dominant 3–0 sweep over Capital and a wild, five-set battle against Mountain View in the District Tournament play-in match.
  • Boys Soccer: Led by first-year Head Coach Dante Montgomery, the team battled through a brutal conference schedule and earned their spot in the IHSAA State Playoff bracket.
  • Girls Soccer: Played with incredible toughness and team unity all fall, laying down a strong foundation and culture for next season. Coached by Dave Rider
Welcoming Our Winter Sports Head Coaches.  With a strong fall foundation set, Kuna High School is excited to transition into the 2026–2027 winter season! We look forward to seeing our athletes excel under fantastic leadership on the court and mat:
  • Boys Basketball: Welcoming new Head Coach Kobe Terashima as he takes the reins to lead the Kavemen onto the court.
  • Wrestling: Welcoming Head Coach Kreede Peterson as he steps in to take our wrestling program to new heights.

Mr. Horning

A veteran educator with sixteen years of expertise, Andrew Horning instructs French and Math 1 Lab at Swan Falls High School. His approach to language acquisition emphasizes both global linguistic mastery and the enrichment of students' foundational English skills. Dedicated to educational innovation, Mr. Horning thoughtfully evolves his instructional strategies to ensure a rewarding, immersive, and rigorous academic experience.

Loving French and Math with Mr. Horning

In M. André’s French classes, students immerse themselves in Francophone culture through interactive story-building with "François la Baguette," crafting original narratives, and analyzing contemporary French news. Meanwhile, in Math 1 Lab, students deepen their conceptual understanding through collaborative, interactive problem-solving alongside Mr. André at the board. Both initiatives highlight the unwavering dedication and impressive caliber of work his students deliver each week.

Ms. Hansen

Mrs. Hansen brings her passion for creative expression to Kuna High School, where she teaches Art 1, Beginning Drawing, and Sculpture 1 & 2. Now in her second year at KHS and fourth year in education, she can often be seen navigating the hallways with her mobile art cart as a traveling educator. During the summers, she continues her commitment to arts education through the TRIO Upward Bound program.
A 2022 graduate of Boise State University with a degree in Art Education and a focus in ceramics, Mrs. Hansen originally hails from Sandpoint, Idaho. She recently relocated to Meridian from Mountain Home alongside her husband and their three pets. Mrs. Hansen is thrilled to be part of the Kuna High community and remains dedicated to fostering student artistic growth for years to come.

Learning Art with Ms. Hansen

In Sculpture 1, students explore three-dimensional design using a diverse range of mediums, including cardboard, plaster, paper, soap, ceramics, wire, and polymer clay. Having recently mastered foundational hand-building techniques, students are currently applying their skills to design and construct intricate lanterns from kiln-fired clay.
A collage of four photos shows students engaged in art class, with the text "SCULPTURING WITH MS. HANSEN" at the top.

Mrs. Weatherby

This year marks my 32nd year in education. My teaching journey began at Emmett High School, where I taught for six years (1995–2001) before returning home to Kuna High School, where I have taught ever since.
A proud 1989 graduate of Kuna High School, my roots here run deep—my family moved to Kuna from California in 1980 when I was in the third grade, and I’ve called it home ever since. Outside the classroom, I am married to my high school sweetheart, BJ Weatherby (class of '95). We are the proud parents of our daughter, Courtney, who followed in our footsteps by marrying her college sweetheart, Sam Lecholat. Both Courtney and Sam were student-athletes at Montana State University, where she played volleyball and he played basketball.

Learning how the Government works with Weatherby

In Government class, Weatherby's senior students are taking center stage to share their knowledge of our nation's founding documents. Each student is presenting a specific section of the U.S. Constitution—from the Preamble and core Articles to key Amendments—to small learning groups. This interactive approach allows students to engage in meaningful civil discourse while deepening their understanding of constitutional principles.

Mr. Longgood

Pete Longgood has devoted his professional career to educating, mentoring, and supporting students, bringing his experience and dedication to education from Kodiak, Alaska, to Kuna High School in Kuna, Idaho.
Longgood spent an important part of his teaching career in Kodiak, Alaska, where he worked as an educator and basketball coach. During his time in Kodiak, he also participated in the school district's social studies curriculum development, contributing to the planning and improvement of instructional materials and learning opportunities for students. His involvement in curriculum development demonstrated a commitment to education that extended beyond his own classroom and into the broader school community.
After leaving Alaska, Longgood continued his career in Idaho, eventually joining the staff at Kuna High School. Throughout his time at Kuna, he has continued working with students, drawing on his experience in education, curriculum development, and athletics.
In addition to his classroom responsibilities, Longgood has remained involved in high school athletics. He previously served as an assistant varsity basketball coach at Vallivue High School before becoming the head boys varsity basketball coach at Kuna High School. During his coaching tenure, he helped guide the Kavemen to a state tournament appearance in 2020.
While basketball has been an important part of his professional journey, Longgood's career reflects a broader commitment to public education. From his work developing social studies curriculum in Alaska to his years teaching at Kuna High School, he has contributed to the academic and personal development of students in the communities he has served.

Exploring Civics with Mr. Longgood

In Government class, Mr. Longgood is engaging his students in practical civics by exploring voter registration requirements and examining the key measures appearing on Idaho’s 2026 general election ballot. By analyzing real-world election materials, students gain a firsthand understanding of the democratic process and the foundational responsibilities of active citizenship.

CAST Helps with Trunk or Treat

Last Saturday, CAST students stepped up and helped out at the City of Kuna Annual Tick Treat in downtown Kuna.  Students had a blast and loved helping out.
